Who doesn’t love tricks?
Trick training is a chance to interact with your dog
without the self-imposed stress of training for competition or
pet manners. It
is an opportunity to teach your dog ‘show off’ skills that
impress your friends, and it’s certainly always a good
laugh: but trick training can be much more than that.
Trick training also teaches problem solving, increases
attention, and improves physical fitness.
For instructors, tricks are perfect to improve compliance and
jazz up interest in "boring" foundation skills for
pet manners classes or to get competition students to stretch
their dogs before training and trialing.
Whether your dog is a highly trained competition dog, the
family pet, or a puppy just learning his name, as long as he
has an appetite he can have fun learning new ways to impress
you. This
high-energy workshop will cover golden oldies like shaking
hands and rolling over as well as less common tricks like
crawling backward, playing an instrument, and shrinking.
We’ll cover ‘good dog’ tricks like turning on the
light and pouring a drink and ‘bad dog’ tricks like
digging and destroying. Since
dogs come in all shapes and sizes, tricks do too, so we’ll
all work together to find the perfect tricks to showcase each
dog’s special qualities.
Many of the tricks we’ll cover
in the workshop also double as fun ways to teach body
awareness, improve core strength, increase flexibility and
sharpen focus. Those of us who compete in dog sports know the importance of
keeping our dogs in top shape, but remembering to do exercises
every day can be a chore.
When exercise is built into trick training and
performance, your dog will get a good workout even when
you’re just showing off silly tricks to your family and
neighbors.
Rather than taking a cookbook
approach to teaching each trick step by step, Sassie will
teach you simple techniques that will enable you to teach a
wide variety of tricks quickly and easily.
You’ll go home not only with a dog who knows some new
tricks, but with a good foundation for lots of others.
Every
dog has at least one trick that he will excel at, and every
trick has benefits way beyond just goofing around.
Come teach your new dog old tricks and your old dog new
tricks, and feel good about all the good you’re doing for
them.
Dog Training for Working Participants (limited -
30)
You and your dog will be paired with another handler/dog team during training exercises.
On some exercises you and your training partner will take turns
alternating working the dogs. So you can assist each other.
You may request your partner on the registration form. If
you do not request a partner at least 14 days before the
event starts we will match you with another participant.
You
may bring two dogs to the day but you must alternate only
working one dog per trick/session. If you bring two dogs,
the dog not working must be able to be quiet in a crate or
ex-pen or stay in the car if weather permits. There will be multiple training sessions.
Requirement for working participants -
Dogs should have basic obedience/pet manners skills and be under control of the owner.
Dogs
must be able to stay quietly in a crate or ex-pen out of
owners sight and must
be tolerant of people and dogs working in close
proximity. No reactive dogs.
Auditors
(approx. - 15)
If your dog does not meet the requirements, or you prefer to observe, come and watch
the dogs and handlers work through the progressions.
Auditors can choose to help a dog trainer with props and
assist during the training sessions.
Auditors,
please leave your dogs at home or in the car if appropriate.
The parking lot is safe but does not have shade.
